PM fiber functionality
In the fiber optic industry, polarization maintaining fiber stands out as a singlemode fiber capable of preserving linear polarization during transmission.
The polarization of the light remains constant throughout its propagation.
For the connectorization of PM fiber cables, connectors with a high level of precision are used.
These are characterized by:
- low insertion loss
- high extinction ratio
- high return loss
- variability over a wide range of wavelengths
- environmental stability and reliability
Applications of PM Fibers
- PM fibers, designed to guide linearly polarized light, find applications in optical sensors and telecommunications.
- PM fiber cables are used in polarization sensitive fiber optic systems, where it is critical to keep the optical light in a linear state.
- They can be integrated with devices such as interferometric sensors, integrated optics and fiber amplifiers in coherent and high speed telecommunications.
- The implementation of PM fiber cables represents an effective solution, capable of guaranteeing the high performance and reliability of data transmission in scenarios where maintaining the linear state of the optical light is fundamental.
Types of PM patches
The choice of the type of PM fiber patch takes several factors into consideration.
- Type of connector: PM patches are assembled with connectors typically used in the TLC market (LC, SC, FC and ST)
- The connectors on both ends may be identical or different
- Fiber type: PM patches use fibers at different wavelengths (850nm, 1310nm and 1550nm)
- Cable sheath: PM patches can be made with 250 μm bare fiber, with 900 μm loose buffer and with 2mm or 3mm diameter cables.
- Patch Length: According to customer's request.
